Speaking Up: When Something Doesn't Feel Right

Foundation18 min read

There are moments in this work when something doesn't sit right with you. A comment that sticks in your mind. A decision that doesn't add up. A practice you've witnessed that troubles you. These moments matter.

Speaking up about concerns — whether they're about a colleague's conduct, a decision made by management, or a way things are being done — is one of the most important things you can do in frontline homelessness work. It takes courage, especially when you're worried about relationships, your job, or whether anyone will listen.

But here's what matters: your voice has value. Your observations, your questions, your concerns — they exist because you see something that needs attention. And organisations that don't want to hear concerns are organisations with problems that grow.

This module is about recognising when something feels wrong, understanding why speaking up matters, and knowing you're not alone when you do. It's for everyone — support workers, managers, volunteers, administrators. If you work in homelessness services and something doesn't feel right, this is for you.

By the end, you'll feel clearer about what concerns are worth raising, when and how to raise them, and what support is available to you.
