Escalation: Knowing When and How to Act

Developing20 min read

Most of the time, concerns get resolved at the level they're raised. A quiet word to a colleague and they adjust. A conversation with your manager and a plan is put in place. An informal chat and understanding improves.

But sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you raise something and nothing changes. Sometimes the issue is too serious for informal handling. Sometimes you don't feel safe raising it with your direct manager because they're part of the problem.

That's when you escalate.

Escalation means going further up the hierarchy, going outside the organisation, or using formal processes. It means saying: "This needs more than a conversation; this needs serious attention."

Knowing when to escalate and how to do it is critical. Escalate too early and you might damage relationships unnecessarily. Escalate too late and harm continues while you're hoping someone will notice. Escalate to the wrong place and your concern gets lost.

This module is about having a clear framework for deciding when escalation is needed and how to do it effectively.

By the end, you'll know when to escalate, where to escalate to, and what to expect.
