Why People Become Homeless: Causes and Context

Foundation18 min read

Homelessness is rarely caused by one single thing. Behind each person's story is a unique set of circumstances — but those circumstances almost always involve a combination of structural factors (things that happen in society, housing, and the economy) and personal factors (what has happened in someone's own life).

Understanding why people become homeless matters for how you do your job. It shapes how you talk with people, how you understand their situation, and how you approach the work. It also shapes something deeper — holding onto a wider perspective makes it easier to maintain a sense of hope and compassion, even when the challenges feel relentless.

This module looks at the main causes of homelessness in England today. It explores structural causes — including housing, welfare, and inequality — alongside personal and relational factors such as relationship breakdown, mental health, and childhood experience. It also considers why some groups are more affected than others.

By the end of this module, you will have a clearer picture of why homelessness happens, feel more confident discussing causes with colleagues and those you support, and be better placed to hold a full, compassionate understanding of the people you work with.
