The Equality Act 2010: What It Means in Practice

Foundation16 min read

The Equality Act 2010 is the legal framework that protects people from discrimination in Great Britain. As someone working in the homelessness sector, it shapes your responsibilities both as an employer and as a service provider.

This module gives you a practical grounding in the Act — what it covers, who it protects, and what it means for your day-to-day work with people who face multiple and overlapping forms of disadvantage.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Name and describe the nine protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010
  • Explain the main types of prohibited conduct (direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, harassment, victimisation)
  • Describe the Public Sector Equality Duty and what it requires of public bodies
  • Apply equality thinking to everyday decisions in your practice
