Some of the most powerful and least discussed dynamics in support work involve the way that feelings and patterns from the past enter the present relationship — both from the person you are supporting and from you.
Transference and countertransference are concepts from psychotherapy that have direct practical relevance for anyone doing relational support work. Understanding them helps you make sense of reactions — in yourself and in the people you work with — that might otherwise seem puzzling or overwhelming.
This is an advanced module that assumes some familiarity with reflective practice and the emotional demands of support work.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Explain what transference and countertransference mean in a support context
- Recognise common patterns of transference in the people you support
- Identify countertransference reactions in yourself
- Use these concepts to deepen your practice and protect your wellbeing
