There is a particular challenge at the heart of work in homelessness services: you are human. You bring your own history, your own emotional responses, and your own needs to every interaction. And unlike a machine, you cannot be switched off between shifts.
This module is about the internal experience of caring work — what happens inside you when you sit with someone else's pain, when a situation you cannot fix plays on your mind, or when the weight of the work starts to feel heavier than usual.
It looks at transference and countertransference — the emotional undercurrents that run beneath every support relationship — and at how honest self-awareness about these dynamics protects both you and the people you support.
It also offers practical guidance for staying well over the long term: not just managing symptoms when they appear, but building genuine sustainability into your working life.
This is a Foundation-level module suitable for all workers in homelessness services. It does not require prior knowledge of psychology.
