Supporting Someone in Emotional Distress

Developing18 min read

There is a difference between mental health crisis and emotional distress — although both matter, and both require skill to respond to. Someone in emotional distress may not be in a psychiatric emergency. They may simply be struggling: overwhelmed by their circumstances, grieving, frightened, frustrated, or exhausted. These experiences are common and human, and responding to them well is a core skill for any frontline worker.

This module explores how to support someone in emotional distress — drawing on principles from active listening, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed practice. It is practical: it gives you specific skills you can use in conversations, rather than general principles to agree with and then not know how to apply.

This is a Developing-level module within Subject 5: Mental Health and Wellbeing.
