Roles and Services in the Homelessness Sector

Foundation15 min read

When you are new to the homelessness sector — or when you have been in one part of it for a long time — it can be hard to see the full picture. There are many different kinds of services, many different roles, and many different organisations all working alongside each other. Understanding how it all fits together is useful, whether you are trying to make a referral, explain your role to someone you support, or think about your own career development.

This module gives you a grounding in the landscape of homelessness services in England. It covers the main types of services — from outreach and day centres to supported accommodation and Housing First — and introduces the main frontline roles, drawing on the National Homelessness Skills Framework developed by Homeless Link.

It also looks at how services connect: how people move through the system, what coordinated pathways look like, and what gets in the way.

This is a Foundation-level module, suitable for anyone who is new to the sector or who wants to build a clearer picture of the wider landscape they are working within.
