Psychologically Informed Inductions: Starting Well

Foundation15 min read

The first hours and days of someone arriving in a new service are among the most critical moments in their journey. For people with complex trauma histories — which describes the majority of people accessing supported homelessness services — those first experiences shape whether they will engage, whether they will trust, and ultimately whether the support they receive will make a difference.

A psychologically informed induction is not about ticking boxes or completing paperwork efficiently. It is about creating the conditions for a real relationship to begin. It is about giving someone the information, choice, and dignity they need to feel safe in an unfamiliar environment.

This module draws on Homeless Link's 7-Minute Briefing on Psychologically Informed Inductions — a practical resource developed with frontline practitioners. It explores what makes inductions work, and what makes them harmful, through a trauma-informed lens.

This is a Foundation-level module within Subject 2: Trauma-Informed Practice and PIE.
