Positive action is one of the most misunderstood provisions of the Equality Act 2010. It is often confused with positive discrimination — which is unlawful — but is quite different in both meaning and application.
This module explains what positive action is, when it is lawful, and how it can be used to improve outcomes for people who face particular disadvantages. It also explores how positive action thinking applies to the way you design and deliver services.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Explain the difference between positive action and positive discrimination
- Describe when positive action is lawful under the Equality Act 2010
- Give examples of positive action in service delivery and employment practice
- Apply positive action thinking to improve outcomes for underserved groups
