One of the most useful things a frontline homelessness worker can do is help the people they support understand their housing options — what is available, how it works, and how to access it. But this requires knowing the landscape yourself.
Housing options are not simple. Social housing, private renting, shared accommodation, supported housing, Housing First, Help to Buy — the range of routes into settled housing is wide, and the barriers, eligibility criteria, and practical realities differ significantly for each.
This module gives you a practical overview of the main housing options available in England, with particular attention to the pathways most commonly navigated by people experiencing homelessness. It is designed to give you a working knowledge, not specialist housing advice skills.
This is a Foundation-level module within Subject 7: Housing and Homelessness Systems.
