Working in homelessness services is meaningful work. It is also emotionally demanding, often distressing, and — without adequate support — capable of doing real harm to the people who do it.
Burnout and vicarious trauma are two distinct but related experiences that affect workers in this sector at significant rates. Understanding them — what they are, how they develop, and what the signs look like — is not a sign of weakness. It is essential professional knowledge.
This module focuses on recognition. It explains what burnout and vicarious trauma are, how they differ, and what the early warning signs look like. It does not assume that either is inevitable — both can be mitigated by good organisational practice and self-awareness. But the first step is being able to see them.
This is a Foundation-level module. It is relevant to everyone in homelessness services — including managers, who need to be able to recognise these signs in the people they support.
